Quantum nucleonic reactors.

Not quite cold fusion but has anybody heard anything new on Quantum
Nucleonic Reactor research? I saw some stuff on it last year with the
US military funding some research in that area. Is there any new info?

What precisely is the underlying physical theory of a "Quantum
Nucleonic Reactor".

There was talk a while back about using a metastable form of Hafnium-178
(Hf178m) to produce energy. As I recall, this isotope was bombarded with
soft x-rays, which supposedly increased the decay rate to the point that
much of the enegy was released in a sort period of time in the form of gamma
rays.

A few subsequent attempts to replicate the original experiment have failed
to substantiate the above claims. Plus, the metastable isotope is quite hard
to produce, as I recall. The name "Quantum Nucleonics" that the original
author cites was coined by Popular Science magazine in an article that
appeared about a year ago on this subject.

I wouldn't jump to consider this as a useful power source, nor would I jump
to discredit it. Research thus far has been too limited to shed any light on
what really is going on, if anything.
