Is there something called "hydrochloric carbinol"?
|
|
|
A person (non-chemist) came to me, apparently from a pharmacy
department of another university looking for a synonym of "hydrochloric
carbinol"? I asked if he knew the formula, he said "No". Though the
name seems to be either obsolete or meaningless, was this name known to
older organic chemists?
Could somebody kindly verify if this is a spelling problem or this
compound name is absurd?
Google is of no help here.
Thanks. |

carbinol is the old name for methanol ... and many compounds used that
designation ... for the C-OH group ... like butyl carbinol which is
really 1-pentanol and methyl propyl carbinol is 2-pentanol and diethyl
carbinol which is 3 pentanol ...
Hydrochloric carbinol to me is a solution of HCl in methanol ... though
I've never heard it expressed like that ...
There's also carbitol ... but Hydrochloric carbitol makes even less
sense ... |

It seems possible they could mean the rather unstable formyl chloride. |

GOOGLE: "carbinol HCl" 4 hits.
A nsec read suggests good hits.

Maybe ... but even the less stable (if not just transient)
Chloromethanol which would be consistent with the naming conventions
using carbinol ... |

Perhaps it's just acidified methanol (HCl in methanol), this is a
commonly used solution and it is sold by chemical suppliers. |
