I think maximizing surface area per pressure drop is much more important
than packing density.

Minimizing dispersion can be important in adsorption and ion exchange.

Is this question the result of the finding that M&M candies are rather
densily packed and wondering about catalyst packing?

yes - a 4% increase in packing density is nice... assuming it doesn't
increase the cost of catalyst preparation, that is
