The explanation I gave is of necessity simplified, and I hope the
simplified terminology I used is not too misleading. I was calling the
hair-cells 'cilia' until someone wrote and told me that that is how
researchers refer to the 'spirocilia', which are little tufts of tiny
hairs at the end of each hair-cell - in the literature, these are
apparently sometimes confused with the organ of Corti, which in turn is
sometimes confused with the basilar membrane. Sometimes, pictures of
the 'rods and cones' in the eye have been displayed on internet
websites and labelled as pictures of the ear's 'cilia'.
You may well be right, that the auditory nerve only holds information
temporarily, that the brain "cannot sample what is in the middle" [of
the auditory nerve], and that after a 25th of a second any information
from the ear will have travelled beyond the auditory nerve towards the
auditory cortex.
The explanation I gave is still essentially correct, however, in that
the brain keeps about a 25th of a second's worth of input sound
pressure information at any one time, on a delay-line principle. The
information does not necessarily all have to be on the auditory nerve,
but can be spread out, beyond what you might define as the end of the
auditory nerve, into the neural pathways which extend further into the
brain.
We do of course have two ears, and the brain is split into left and
right halves, connected by a thick bundle of fibres for communication
between the two halves. When hearing, the most basic function
performed by the brain, is comparison of the information from the left
and right ear to detect where a sound is coming from, and at the same
time the brain tries to match this information with previously heard
sounds to identify what it is hearing. The left brain handles the
information from the right ear, and vice versa. It is not unreasonable
to suppose that the brain preserves both versions of the information it
hears, to make subsequent matching more efficient. |

Concerning faster-than-the-speed-of-light-travel, also known as superluminal

Before the universe was created out of the nothingness of outer space, there

accounts of those who have been resucitated from clinical death, and who
have had the courage to confess to having undergone hellish near death
experiences.
There is also the first and second death of Revelation chapter 19:19-21 to
chapter 20 to be aware of, as well as Revelation chapter 6:9-11. In the
meantime, savour every second, for when you finally die and your soul passes
to eternal hell, which goes on forever and ever, your earthly pleasures will
become a curse to you as you commemorate every endless, heartbreaking
anniversary marking your bodily death. Did not Jesus Christ Himself once say
that if the living do not obey the teachings of Moses and the prophets, they
would not be persuaded even though one came back from the dead to warn them

Personally, I have been greatly intrigued in how with all the resources
available in electronic espionage to the U.S. National Security Agency,
Central Security Service, Defence Intelligence Agency, and the Central
Intelligence Agency, it was possible for the U.S. military intelligence
agencies to be genuinely duped into believing that Saddam Hussein's Iraq
possessed Weapons of Mass Destruction [ W.M.D. ], when the Iraqi military
failed to use those weapons in the U.S. war against Iraq in 2003, and has
failed thus far to find the top Al-Qaeda terrorists Osama-bin-Laden and Abu
Musab Al-Zarqawi, the latter being responsible for countless acts of
terrorism in Iraq since March 2003. I do believe however that Iran, which
shares a very long border with Iraq, is actively and secretly trying to
acquire weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear weapons. Both Iran
and Syria, which were allied with each other against Iraq in the Iran-Iraq
war of 1980-1988, have Scud or other kinds of intermediate or medium-range
guided ballistic missiles capable of firing chemical and biological
warheads, and both Syria and Iran have a large stockpile of chemical and
biological shells, rockets, and missiles which can be fired out of mobile
rocket-launchers, tanks, self-propelled artillery pieces, mortars, and
rocket-propelled grenades. Both Syria and Iran share large borders with
Iraq, and both Syria and Iran are hostile and fearful towards the large U.S.

criminal or antisocial, negative emotions and words into their victims by
means of subliminal, subconscious, remote control microwave brainwashing
technology, and they can change the voice behind their words so as to make
it appear that it is the targeted victim and not themselves who are
communicating by means of synthetic telepathy. They can also store emotions
and silently thought words onto a supercomputer memory bank which they can
rebroadcast at a later time. I believe that the synthetic telepathy
operators, although having high I.Q.'s, are probably predisposed towards
sociopathic behaviour because of a genetic defect or combination of genetic
defects, and that the only way they can sustain enthusiasm in their lives is
by engaging in an addictive pattern of sadomasochistic activities and

Concerning faster-than-the-speed-of-light-travel, also known as superluminal
travel, I wonder how any U.F.O. or extraterrestrial from another planet

to eternal hell, which goes on forever and ever, your earthly pleasures will

anniversary marking your bodily death. Did not Jesus Christ Himself once say
that if the living do not obey the teachings of Moses and the prophets, they
would not be persuaded even though one came back from the dead to warn them

observed "precedence effect," as explained by, for instance, Benade,
Fundamentals of Musical Acoustics, pg 204. With this effect, the
apparent location of a sound source coincides with the position of the
source whose sound first strikes our ears, regardless of the true
direction of arrival of sounds that arrive later in a critical time
interval, which is roughly 35 milliseconds. All the sound information
in this time period is interpreted as a single entry, regardless how
the two ears supply the sound. The information in this apprx 35
millisecond time period is perceived as though all its members were
piled upon the first member with no delay. There are some restrictions
on this effect, such as, the sound pressure levels of all members must
be sufficiently alike, and the pressure amplitudes of the latter
members are no more than about three times that of the first member.

-two sounds arriving within 35 ms of each other appear to originate
from the location of the sound arriving first?
and
-two sounds arriving at an interval of more than 35 ms can be
identified as having different origins?
And what kind of sounds is used, are they single-frequency sounds, are
there attack transients, or are they sounds of short enough durations
that they don't overlap? |

Benade was a trailblazer in audio research in the 1970s. This more
recent experiment gives a quite surprising result: take two simple
tunes, the first consisting of ascending notes and the second
consisting of descending notes. Make two further tunes, each
consisting of alternate notes from the original tunes - these both
sound like a sequence of random ups and downs without any meaningful
'tune' to either of them. If these two 'non-tunes' are played to the
ears through stereo head-phones, the brain magically sorts them out and
hears the two original melodies, and the listener hears the ascending
tune as coming from one earphone and the descending tune as coming from
the other! Furthermore, if the stereo head-phones are then reversed
left/right, the listener hears the two melodies in the same ears (left
or right) as before - the brain has learnt to sort out the sound in
that particular way on the first hearing, and interprets what might
otherwise be confusing information the same way on subsequent hearings.
I suppose its something to do with the brain's response to perceiving
two threatening noises simultaneously, one on the left and the other on
the right. The brain seems to decide where the sounds are coming from
at a different priority than identifying what the sounds 'are'. The
brain sometimes makes prioritising mistakes when it hears
psychoacoustic tricks such as puns - 'discussed'/'disgust', for
example. Instead of treating both meanings as equally likely, the
brain selects one or the other depending on the previous context, and
so it can be fooled quite easily - the words in adverts and pop-songs
often use this effect, which is called 'backwards masking' in the
published literature.
The 1/25 of a second figure is interestingly close to the lowest
audible frequency, as well as to the frame-rate for video, which must
give us some information to ponder about about the workings of our
brains. The figure is used in the scanning rate of synthesiser
keyboards: because the brain cannot distinguish between individual
sounds if they are separated by less than 0.04s, the keys only need to
be scanned at 25Hz. Notes separated by less than 0.04s are heard as
though they are being played simultaneously as a chord, but a sound
occurring more than 0.04s after a previous sound is treated as a new
'event' - the brain stops analysing the previous sound and starts
thinking about the new sonic event, keeping its best guess so far of
what the previous events were, and using it to help make a decision
about what the incoming sound means, and what it should do about it. |

Yes. This is why delays are incorporated in PA speaker systems for
long halls. If a listener is far from the original sound source and if
the speaker cabinet near the listener is delayed enough so that the
direct sound from the original source strikes the listener no more than
about 35 ms before the sound from the speaker cabinet does, the
listener will perceive the sound to originate from the original source
- subject to the conditions I stated earlier.
