Purity of Water-for-Injection (WFI) vs. HPLC-grade water vs. ultrapure water vs. Purified Water (PW)
|
|
|
What grade has the highest purity? I did a search on the internet, but the
purity summary specifications are not easy to find in comparable units for
easy reference!
Anybody know off the top of their heads?
Thanks,
Niles Ron
P.S. I don't care about sterility itself...I am trying to identify a source
of a contaminant (~ 80 to 90 kD) in non-reducing SDS-PAGE gels (with
Comassie staining for proteins) and trying to decide if the contaminant is
coming from my water. We use HPLC water for sample preparation, and we are
trying to decide if we need to switch to a higher-grade water. Please help!
Thanks!! |

If you believe the contaminant is biological, and you're sure its your
water, you might have better luck getting water from a system that is
not only 18 mOhm pure, but has a UV cell to destroy organics. Collect
the water in scrupulously clean glassware, and use it promptly.
WFI, if I recall correctly, simply means a lack of human immune
reacting proteins -- the biggest offenders are ubiquitous mycobacterium
proteins. Just removing them won't help you if other small proteins,
or maybe some other molecules are the cause of your problem.
The answer to your problem is not likely weather the water is 99.99%
pure vs 99.98%, for example. It matters what the trace contaminant is.
Try to get water from a lab that has a water system like I described
above. |

I recall reading a paper that tested the relative purities of water ("HPLC"
grade and such) ... and IIRC, the "best" water came from the household
filter cartridges
You may not need to switch to a higher grade, just a different grade - or
brand ... or ... :)
