maxima <-> wintexmacs question
|
|
|
I started to use Maxima with WinTeXMax (the latest Windows releases for
both). The combo looks great and it looks like it may became my
favourite working tool (can't afford a copy of Mathematica on every
computer I'm on).
[For those interested in how does it look like:
http://www.bekkoame.ne.jp/~michioga/maxima/
and http://www.texmacs.org/tmweb/download/windows.en.html]
However, I did encounter a problem when having a Maxima session within
WinTexMacs:
when entering a formula in the session, like
| Quote: | x^2;
then asking for a derivative I am getting in WinTeXMacs nicely |
formatted:
2 * X ^2
that is 'x' is capitalized. When the capitalize the entry in the
session line, like
2*x^2
That is the variable changes case again.
I did default installation of both applications on Windows2000, SP4.
This case reversal is annoying.
Any ideas how to solve it? |

Yes. |
Currently, only a subset of an old TeXmacs interface to maxima-5.9.1
has been ported to Windows. Handling case changed radically in maxima-5.9.2.
In the current version, maxima-5.9.3, it is the same. The TeXmacs interface
to maxima-5.9.2 (or 5.9.3) has progressed a lot: it supports mathematical
input mode and has many improvements.
Only one person, the author of WinTeXmacs, worked on porting this interface
to Windows, and this was rather long ago. I have no access to any computer
running Windows, and don't know this OS, so, I cannot port my latest
TeXmacs/maxima interface to Windows. And this seems to be difficult, because
usual tools taken for granted on other platforms (grep, sed, etc. etc.), are
not available on Windows.
So, if you know Windows and are ready to donate some time for the benefit of
the community of Windows users, I'll be happy to answer any questions about
working of the TeXmacs/maxima interface. How to implement the same functionality
in Windows is up to you.

Thank you for your detailed explanation.
Unfortunately I'm j2ee/database person and I do not feel comfortable
even with user interface in Java...
Can I infer from your answer that the best way for me would be to get
Cygwin and use the cygwin wersion of TeXMacs on Windows?
And does it have a chance to work with the current windows version of
Maxima - or do I have to find some cygwin version of Maxima and build
it on Windows? |
