Help! I need synthetic scheme for Vitamine A synthesis
|
|
|
I got an assignment to make a poster on Vitamin A synthesis. I cannot
find any good articles or info neither on the Web nor in the school
library. I know it was first synthesized in 1947. Can anyone help me
with this? I would really appreciate your help. All I need is a link to
a web page or an article. |

How about a suggestion to include Vitamin D and Vitamin E in your analysis?

And (but only if you like cats) a discussion about why cats lick themselves
the way they do. |

Thanks, Jimchip! No, I cannot change my topic! It has to be full
synthesis vitamin A. What do the 2 vitamins have to do with cats,
anyways? |

As a hint: Cats lay in the sun and 'solar-convert' a precursor to "a
vitamin". They then ingest it by licking it off their fur. That's also why
they lick each other (among other motivations).

1947 is Isler.
Helv. Chim. Acta 32 489 (1949)
Bull. Soc. Chim. 83 (1958)
"Art in Organic Synthesis," Vol I; Anad, Bindara, Ranganathan
(Holden-Day, 1970), pp. 351-355.
Look it up in the "Merck Index," 13th Ed.
http://www.uspto.gov/
"Chemical Abstracts"
Get yourself some decent chemical drawing software.

What school library are you using?
http://www.uwlax.edu/clowncamp/htm/florida.htm
As Uncle Al pointed out, check the Merck Index.
Even general encyclopedias have leading references.
Wikipedia credits van Dorp and Arens with the first
synthesis (Nature 1946), preceding Isler.
Check out Kirk-Othmer Enc of Chem Technology for
newer stuff. BASF, LaRoche are the two biggest
producers of Vit A, followed by (I think) Sumitomo.
If you can't find Merck, Kirk-Othmer, etc.,
ASK YOUR REFERENCE LIBRARIAN for help. |

Thank you so much, Uncle Al! You're the MAN! All the references you
gave turned out to be excellent. I am finishing my poster now and will
present it tomorrow in my O. Chem 2 class. Once again, thanks a ton! |
