Spreading in bark scale
|
|
|
Dear group,
I am unable to get books from Zwicker, Terhardt and other relevant
books
about psychoacoustics. So I can not check one thing:
Frequency spreading used in ITU-R BS.1387 is based on Terhardt
"CALCULATING VIRTUAL PITCH":
24+230/fc+0.2*L db/Bark
Is this spreading based on assumption that exact bark scale is used, or
is
it based on assumption that bark scale aproximation by Terhardt is
used?
Please help. |

Anyone:
Can they furnish a definition of "Bark"?...
I'd like to include it in the Acoustics FAQ file..

It's a pitch scale like the mel pitch scale. The scale ranges from 1 to 24
and corresponds to the first 24 critical bands of hearing. Do a google
search for bark scale and mel scale for the equations relating bark and mel
to frequency. |

We have two "schools", the Munich and Cambridge ones, that use little
different definitions or specifications concerning widths and numbers of
critical bands in "pitch/freq-domain".
The Munich school (Bark, Bark-rate), for example:
Zwicker E, Terhard E, Analytical expressions for critical-band rate
and critical bandwidth as function of frequency, J. Acoust. Soc.
Am. 68(1980)5, 1523 - 1525.
The Cambridge school (Cam, "Cam-rate", "Cam-frequency"),
for example:
Moore B, Glasberg B, A revision of Zwicker's loudness model,
Acustica/Acta Acustica, 82(1996)2, 335 - 345.
A note:
These differences have not been considered, for example, in the
tonality assessment method suggested in Annex C of ISO/DIS
1996:2.2:2005, Acoustics - Description, assessment and
measurement of environmental noise - Part 2: Determination
of environmental noise levels.
The draft differs from both the definitions above and is based on
detectability/audibility/prominence of tone/tones (the draft does
not consider how the degree/strength of tonality change noise
effects, like the prevalence of annoyance or sleep disturbances).
