When helicopters fly, they get charged electrically.
This is such a strong effect, that the shock can kill
a man, especially if it has heart problems.

Why do thy charge up?

And do aeroplanes also charge up?
What do aeroplanes do to solve the issue?

Many questions ...

friction, the same as when you rub a balloon on a piece of cloth and stick
it to the wall.

yes

land before you can grab hold of them.

Air rubbing against the aircraft in flight.

There are static discharge wicks on the trailing edges consisting of
conductive fibers.

Why do thy charge up?

It's called "electrification by contact." When the blades and
fuselage collide with raindrops or snow, the water (or ice) aquires a
charge, and the metal surface aquires an equal and opposite charge.

Also, during thunderstorms the electrostatic field in the air can
create "corona discharge" on the sharp edges of the aircraft, and the
aircraft will emit charged air (and therefore aquire and equal and
opposite charge.)

Note that some books contain a common error: that objects can become
electrified by "rubbing against the air." This is a myth. No matter
how hard you might blow on a suspended metal object, the object will
not become charged. But if you put a bit of water in the blast of air
(or ice, or sand, ) then the object WILL charge up.

Yep.

If you get a chance to board a small plane, look at the wingtips near
the trailing edge of the wings. Small rods sticking out are the
"dischargers," they are tipped with extremely sharp conductive fibers
which intentionally create a glow-discharge or "St. Elmo's Fire" which
leaks away the excess charge. Also, tires are made of conductive
black rubber (carbon filled,) so if the runway is slightly damp, the
excess charge will quickly drain away.

iam a student and have a keen intrest can you tell me more about it as
i also read that the left wing tip of flying aeroplane ia +vely charged
but i could not get any detail please help me as i think that it is

in the northern hemisphere the left wing tip gets positively charged and the
right one is negatively charged, in the southern hemisphere it is reversed.
must have something to do with the earths magnetic field inducing currents
on the large conducting surface area of the plane.
