In the xy-plane, line k has positive slope and x-intercept 4. if the
area of the triangle formed by line k and the two axes is 12, what is
the y-intercept of the line k?

thanks
jaya.

Start with this:
Draw a picture of a line with positive slope and x-intercept
4 so you can see this triangle they are talking about.

The triangle is half the rectangle formed by the X and Y axes and the
abscissa and ordinate of a certain point P which you can draw easily
yourself once you have drawn line k.
This rectangle has area 24 and a side 4. So the other side is 6. This is
the Y intercept. Please find out yourself at what side of the origin
this intercept is situated.

The triangle is a right triangle. The perpendicular legs are the x
and y axes. The leg on the x axis has a length of four. What is the
length of the leg on the y axis? What two points on the y axis are
end points of such a leg? Which of these two points results in line k
having a positive slope?
