I need to concoct a gel from food staff found easily in a supermarket.
The concentration of iron needs to be 1 to 4 times that of iron in
muscle or liver tissue. I need to be able to draw a known quality of
the gel into a syringe for imaging under a MRI magnet. Any help on this
will be apperciated.

Elmers glue and Borax, then add your iron.

Forgive my ignorance. I am a layperson with little knowledge of
chemistry (primary school level). How do you add iron to the mixture.
The iron needs to be in the same form as in liver, muscle, etc. which I
understand is in Fe3+ form ?

Iron in haemoglobin (and myoglobin in muscles) is Fe(2), in cytochromes it
alternates between Fe(2) and Fe(3). I don't know about ferredoxin or
whatever the liver iron store compound is called, but I expect that it will
be Fe(2) also.

The iron may also show up very differently when bound to biological
molecules than when in solution.

I very much doubt that you will find iron compounds of high purity and known
concentration in a supermarket.

Visit a slaughterhouse for a gallon or two of steer blood. All you
need is a bucket - and it gels itself. Adjust gel water content to
taste in dialysis tubing. Garden supply sells dried blood as
fertilizer (nice for roses and gardenias as long as the soil is
acid). Ascorbic acid early on and anaerobic conditions throughout
would be helpful.

Visit a Hamtramck, MI restaurant and request czarnina. Whale and seal
muscle is bursting with myoglobin. Nobody who fishes will miss a few
seals.
