Take a look at this website. TOC analyzers are a big business for them.

It has normally been done by extracting the water with an appropriate
solvent,
cleaning up the extract, and analyzing by infrared spectrophotometry.
Freon(tm)
has been used, but is somewhat in disfavor. Other solvents having no C-H
absorption
bands might be adapted.

There are modifications to remove polar compounds from the extracts, etc.
if
you view that as being appropriate to your goals. A simple pass down an
alumina
gel column can do that, and you can later elute the polar fragments and
analyze if
you wish.

The waters often carry short chain carboxylates, in some cases even phenols
and other interesting materials.

When you start looking for things carefully, you may sometimes be surprised
at
what you find;>)

Please download application notes from our website. www.unitedchem.com

We offer solid phase extraction products that can make your task very
simple. Go to SPE publications and download the DRO extraction method,
or email us.
