Spring 2006 is about to be over, Uncle Al!
Any news on your diamond synthesis experiments you would like to
share...?!

Spring 2006. I've got equipment and consummables in hand....

Uncle is apparently living in the lab, I have not seen his postings

for a while...

Thank you for asking! Aside from a rainy season 60 days longer than
usual... We start the third and final series of attempts in July. If
the San Andreas fault cuts loose before then I shall be every
displeased.

I had it all figured out! I was going to pursue technical
incompetence exercising intellectual irresponsibility, but my golf
handicap was not low enough for management or politics. Pity.

1999-(the "final attempt!)

2003-final test run

2004--third and final set of runs

2005--third and final (having problems counting past 3?)

And I thought the list would have a hole in it for 2006....

At least now you have the 3rd, "Third and Final" experiment!

Btw aren't they already making gem-quality diamonds
in mass production? What do you think about this:
http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/11.09/diamond.html

Anyway, I don't disagree that any chemical way of producing
diamonds would be extremely interesting from purely scientific
point of view, so good luck to Uncle.

Here is the usual sequence of events

1) a thread like this one, "How's the diamond project"
2) a lot of hype about how Mr. Schwartz's idea could revolutionize the
world
3) a silent period around the supposed experiment date
4) a period of time where management, the weather, poor engineering,
etc. are blamed for the lack of success.
5) a period of relative quiet
6) goto (1)

At some point each person who reads the threads has to ask him/herself,
"Do I really believe there is a diamond project, or do I think that
Uncle Al is a bit of a nutter who is trolling for attention."

The number of lies involved (e.g. this it the "third and final"
attempt) make it hard for this reader to believe that the project
really exists.

It is a very successful troll. There are always people waiting to
believe. New people subscribe to the newsgroups every day. If it is
fun for them, great. It obviously serves some need for Mr. Schwartz.

You left out step 4.5 (between 4 and 5) in which Uncle Al gets in a
high dudgeon about how sci.chem is not worthy of his genius, and that
he will never, ever, post again to sci.chem, leading to the "relative
quiet" of step 5.

Well, I know Uncle and his project since the early 90s, so I am well
aware of what you are saying. But nutters and crazy ideas are integral
part of usenet, and some of them are becoming extinct. So we need to
nurture and preserve whatever is left rather than bluntly shut them up
like they recently did with that wandering bear in germany.
If fact I used to be collecting the crazy ideas from russian usenet
philosophy in a "detander park", kind of a zoo for these animals. It was
quite entertaining for a while but last years I have noticed a marked
decrease in idea-generation activity.

Evgenij
