Soundproof Box for Sleeping (to protect against noise from a bar)
|
|
|
I wish to construct a sleeping area for myself to protect against
the bar which is on the other side of one wall (both in a one-story
building).
I measured 80 decibels (maximum) on my side of the wall. My sleep
physician
suggested I try for a 40 decibel reduction.
Using the Handbook of Noise and Vibration Control, Fourth Edition,
it looks like I need 3/4 inch plywood with about 10 millimeters of lead
to achieve this at 100 Hz. (I did not do a frequency analysis on the
sound but I can tell it often has a low-frequency component.)
Does this seem reasonable?
The real question is whether I need a six sided sleeping area or will
five door. That is, it will be completely open on the side opposite
the sound. My intention is to build something about one meter by one
meter
by two meters. How much sound would get around the enclosure and come
at me from the opposite direction? None of the books on noise control
I read discussed this.
Many have suggested covering the wall. However, that seems more
expensive
and less effective. I am only in the apartment to sleep and I don't
mind
sleeping in an enclosed area.

A good number, but really out of the realm of possibility.

Drywall' many layers of it, is the cheapest massive sound attenuator.

The usual problem with contemporary popular music.

no

Hopeless. The sound level inside teh box will be essentially that
existing at the edge of the opening of your protecitve walls.

As noted above.

Get another apartment.
That bar has spoiled that neighborhood.
The one you are in now was probably "at a good price", and now you know why.
Look for a quiet neighborhood.
In my single days, I roomed with private families.. the best deal of all.

I would add this general point to Angelo's comments:
It is no good taking a single figure of performance from a book and thinking
that you will get an improvement of that amount, by adding that material
into your existing setup. You are likely to be very disappointed.
Sound insulation is about controlling the vibration of solid materials and
air, in total systems of construction. You need to consider the whole
system: the external room, the internal box, and the air in both.
