Hi Nicola,

You can download Borland Pascal 5.5 for free here:

http://bdn.borland.com/article/0,1410,20803,00.html

I use Borland Pascal daily, and there's not much difference between TP5.5,
TP6, and TP7/BP7. If a program compiles on 5.5, it will compile and run on
all the later versions.

There is an excellent debugger that ships with Turbo C 3.0 that is
compatible with TASM, C, and all versions of Turbo Pascal. It uses extended
memory so it only needs about 78k of DOS ram. It also handles 32-bit mode
so you can use EAX, etc. It's called TD286 and is a real gem. It runs only
in pure DOS mode, so I believe you need Win98 to use it. That's what I run,
and I see little reason to upgrade.

Use a Pascal-to-C translator and C compiler.

At one time the pascal 7 compiler could be down loaded free from the
Borland site. Borland was bought by or changed it's name to
Inprise. The web site address I have is http://www.insprise.fr
there should be a link
to an English langauge site.
I would suggest that you use Delphi instead. It is based on the
pascal langauge but much easier to use.

Agree, if you use an old pascal compiler, then you will be limited to...
1. DOS based systems (e.g Turbo Pascal) - including the old 8.3 files
names!
2. or at best 16 bit Windows (e.g T.P. for Windows), still 8.3 file names,
and a right pain to program - you have to design everything by hand.
