Doesn't surprise me a bit. It's hard to get into a teaching position at
an American university and be tenured. The pay isn't too great compared
to an industry job, but there isn't enough demand for PhDs in industry
it seems.

Without having read the article (can't access blogspot at work) I would
say that (IMHO) the reason solar power hasn't taken off is its low
effciency. We haven't even scratched 10% yet. Until we hit 50% it won't
be a viable power source to create electricity, but it sure works well
on the roof in some areas of the country as a water heater and battery
charger. Pays for itself after a few years.

predators. Evolution would not favor a squirrel that had to remove most
of the dirt with its mouth to another location.

Carrying my conjecture even further in that I notice these ground
squirrels like to have holes where it is a wet spot during rainy days
and early Springtime. So I am guessing that unlike the accepted
hypothesis that the squirrels dig and remove the dirt to another
location by carrying the dirt in their mouths, my hypothesis says the
squirrels are like a drill-bit and drill through the soil and then
compact the loose dirt against the walls of their holes. If my
hypothesis is correct then these squirrels would dig new holes mostly
during wet soils such as after a heavy rainfall and in early
Springtime. That would also account for the reason they like
golfcourses where alot of water sprinkling takes place.

So we have two conjectures to prove which is true, or perhaps both
could be true but one of them is more true than the other. My
Conjecture: the squirrels are like drill bits that drill into the soil,
preferably clay soils, and wet soils and then the squirrels as they
drill, compact the loose dirt up against the walls of their new hole.
The Old-Conjecture is that the squirrels dig and then put the loose
dirt in their mouths and transport the loose dirt to another location.

I do not see any survival value in mouth hauling so much dirt, and see
only negative vantages for such a activity. And the shape of the body
of ground squirrels suggests that they act like a drill-bit. And the
absence of mounds at their entrance hole suggests that they compact
dirt which is mostly clay dirt.

So has anyone analyzed the body of a ground squirrel to see if it acts
as a drill bit and has anyone researched clay dirt to see whether a
squirrel can compact the dirt up against the walls of its hole. And
further, has anyone researched as to the limits of clay dirt as to
whether larger animals such as possums, marmots can compact clay dirt.
Marmots and possums have huge claws for digging and so they would not
act as a drill-bit. I am not familar with the feet and paws (claws?) of
ground squirrels but this has to be compared and analyzed also.

The above makes a very nice graduate thesis work for a student at one
of our Colleges and Universities and would probably be published in a
magazine such as NATURE or SCIENCE, not only for the information that a
animal acts like a drill bit but also the falsehood of thinking that
ground squirrels haul and transport alot of dirt in their mouths.
Whenever we have falsehoods in our science literature they need to be
removed.

Or it could be the lush grass around the golfcourses!

I would doubt that! Such would be an unnecessary hazzard! Thye would
more likely to be picked off by predators transporting dirt! The dirt
mounds around Prairie dog holes accounts for the removed soil very
well!

If we look at the body anatomy of a ground squirrel 13 striped species,
it is long and slender, unlike a chipmunk. This suggests to me that the
function of the body is that of a drill-bit function. That the squirrel
does not dig or remove dirt in its mouth, but rather waits for
Springtime moist soil or after a heavy rainfall to drill its tunnels
and passageways and entry hole. It waits for a saturated soil to drill
new tunnels and then it compacts the clay soil of its walls of the
tunnel.

The old conjecture that the squirrel removes dirt in its mouth would
take the squirrel months and years to build a tunnel that was 40 feet
long.

To my conjecture that the squirrel is a drill bit in wet saturated soil
would take the same squirrel one day to build a 40 foot long tunnel.

To prove which of these two conjectures is true would be as simple and
easy as to trap 2 ground squirrels of 13 strip species and present both
of these trapped squirrels a huge drum of wet clay soil and drum of
dry clay soil. If the squirrels drill into the wet soil, then
experiment is finished.... with only the details to be gleaned.

I invite you to visit http://dreams2text.blogspot.com and check out the
article that suggests ways of reducing the costs of solar power
generation so that solar power production becomes a profitable. Would
love to hear your comments.

I'm glad to see you are on the case. Consider that you will only be able to

pull something under 300 watts per square meter from your solar collectors.
Also in large boilers, the feedwater is warmed with waste heat from the
steam generator section, which is warmed from waste heat from the
superheater section. Adding a solar component might help a little bit on
warming the feedwater, but it would also reduce the waste heat consumed in
the economizer sectio (that's the part of a boiler which warms water from
ambient to just shy of actually boiling). Try putting some numbers on your
system. Figure about 100 watts per square meter of footprint. For a
typical 1000 megawatt power plant, you would thus need 10,000,000 square
meters, or about 10 square kilometers of solar collector.
A fresnel lens will indeed concentrate this a bit, so you could use a 10
square kilometer fresnel lens with a somewhat smaller heat collector under
it.

enough engineering students, and if the economy goes on up there should
be jobs available again. Unfortunately, working in the technology

Further, not taking up a field of study because it may not yield a job
or not enough money is silly. I always told my friends or students to
take up a field they enjoy, afterall they will possibly work in it for
35 - 40 years. I would have better job security going into business and
accounting, but I ain't interested in that at all.

I also firmly believe that if you are talented in your field of study,
employment will find you. After all, talented people are needed
everywhere.

Anyway, become and engineering if you feel it is for you. Enroll in the
program and see if you like it. Try to get a summer internship and work
in the industry to see the people and processes. Don't be scared by
family members telling you that you are not good enough. They aren't
engineers and can't possibly know. At least I expect them not to be
engineers, because I would be disappointed if an engineer tries to talk
somebody interested in the profession out of pursuing this field of
study.

It sounds like a crazy way to do the measurement, but if the material
is very sensitive to contamination and clay seems to be the best
material then I would buy polymer clay at a normal craft store. It is
workable without the mess of a water based clay and while a little
stiffer than wet clay is more consistant in performance.

Assuming that water is a no-no, oils too messy and BBs are too big why
not sand or small plastic beads(also available at a craft store).

Rather than measuring the sides of the cube, you might consider
imersing the clay wrapped part into a water or oil bath and measuring
the change in volume. That is a lot more accurate assuming your part
is not very large. At the same time that would prevent water from
contacting the part.

Another idea is that if the material is a single material type (steel,
aluminum, etc) you could measure take the density of the pure material
and calcuate the volume from the weight. Even if it is an alloy you
should be able to take a sinlge part and use water to get an accurate
volume and then take the weight and calcuate the density. Small scales
are not that expensive.
