I am looking for an answer to which Australian University has the best
facilities for pilot scale fermentation research (specifically ethanol
production).

Well, your IP address says you're in New South Wales, so why not visit
the websites of the schools you're interested in, find the email
addresses of the chemical engineering faculty, and ask them a few
questions?

On that note... (digging into my email system...) there is a researcher
in Australia by the name of Sakkie Pretorius (Google him), now with the
Australian Wine Research Institute. He wrote some very interesting
papers on genetically modified yeasts. Not sure where he taught, or
even if he still teaches. You might send him an email.

Good luck...

Michael
