I am using MuPAD to draw 3-D diagrams, such as the following...

cone := plot::Cone(2, [0,0,0], [0,0,4], FillColor=RGB::Yellow.[0.3]):
cylinder1 := plot::Cone(1,[0,0,0],1,[0,0,2],FillColor=RGB::LightBlue.[1.0]):
cylinder2 := plot::Cone(0.8,[0,0,0],0.8,[0,0,2]):
annulus := plot::Cone(0.8, [0, 0, 2], 1, [0, 0, 2]):
circle := plot::Circle3d(2.0, [0, 0, 0], [0, 0, 1], Color = RGB::Blue,
LineWidth = 0.5):
arrowz := plot::Arrow3d([2, 0, 0], [2, 0, 1.8], TitlePosition = [2.2,0,0.9],
Title = "z",
Color = RGB::Red, TipLength = 4*unit::mm):
arrowh := plot::Arrow3d([-2, 0, 0],[-2, 0, 4], TitlePosition = [-2.2,0,2.0],
Title = "h",
Color = RGB::Red, TipLength = 4*unit::mm):
plot(ViewingBox = [-2.5..2.5, -2.5..2.5, 0..4],
cone, cylinder1, cylinder2, annulus, circle, arrowz, arrowh,
Axes = Origin, AxesTips = FALSE, AxesTitles = ["","",""],
TicksLabelsVisible = FALSE, TicksVisible = FALSE);

I then want to draw a side on view (2-D) and label half of the angle at the
top of the cone with the Greek letter alpha. Finally I want to export the
diagrams as PNG files which would be nice and small - suitable for using on
the Web for student access. The only problem in all of this is using Greek
letters directly without having to play around with psfrag - the only way to
get Greek letters into the diagrams that I know of.

The graphics facility in MuPAD is extremely good and I think it would be
much enhanced if the Greek font set was included. I am putting in a request
for inclusion as a future enhancement.

BTW, is this newsgroup the only method and/or the appropriate method now for

Yes this is a known problem. Under Windows you can use the Symbol font
and use the character a. But this only works by accident and is no
solution for Linux.

The plan is to allow MuPAD typesetting for the text labels in the
graphics. But this is not done yet and will be included in a MuPAD
version after the upcoming MuPAD 4.0.

Questions and feature requests are always welcome in out bug tracking
But there is no newsgroup for this purpose.

OK, I will stick with the Windows machine I can use when I need Greek
alphabet in graphics.

I wasn't sure if /trac was still operating. Thanks again. I will send a
question there I have as a follow-up about elliptic integrals I have from 2
years ago.

Cheers,

On my linux system, I happen to have a font "Standard Symbols L" which
uses the same broken encoding as the Windows Symbol font does, so I can say

plotfunc2d(sin, XAxisTitle="a", YAxisTitle="",
AxisTitleFont=["Standard Symbols L"])

and get an alpha there.

Obviously, having typeset formulae in a plot would be way better, but
that is not there yet. At least, if you have this font as well, you
won't need to go to Windows if you don't want to. :-)

AAAARRRRRRGGGHHH! Now you tell me, just after I went and bought a laptop
running Windows yesterday.

Just, joking :-)

I did actually buy a Windows laptop yesterday, not just to get Greek symbols
in MuPAD, but for other reasons. Thanks for the clue on getting Greek
symbols into Linux MuPAD. That gives me great flexibility. Full typesetting
into textual graphics will be superb when that is implemented.

I understand that MuPAD 4.0 is due to fall out of the sky sometime in July.
Is there an actual firm release date at this stage?

Cheers,

Sure, but don't expect it in 4.0.

What is fixed and firm in life? Of course, we do have plans, but
experience says they may move a few days in any direction, so we
generally don't pre-announce them. Saves disappointment on the users'
side and gives us the flexibility not to ship a product that should have
got two more days of work.

Christopher
