Drawing automata/trees

[I guess this still matches math and undergrad...]

I'm writing a document where I need to draw some finite automatas and
trees. Using LaTeX and Windows, what tools would you recommend for the
drawings? I have understood (and slightly tested) that LaTeX extensions
(packages...?) can be painful for this and some sort of external tool
would be better.

Any suggestions?

Try comp.text.tex .
