What is a good model to analyze unbalanced hierarchical networks?

Dear all,
I am working on a problem that needs to analyze the network performance for
an unbalanced hierarchical network structure.
Basically, I have an network routing algorithm, and I have completed the
analysis for a 1-D balanced hierarchical structure. Now I need to analyze
the algorithm's performance under a more realistic network model -- 1-D and
2-D unbalanced hierarchical network structure. I am a little stuck! :)
So what is the usual way to perform such an analysis? That is, transforming
an analysis for the balanced network structure to an unbalanced (1-D or 2-D)
network structure. Or is there a common model for unbalanced hierarchical
structure people usually use in their analyses? Statistical (or average
case) analysis will be great.
Thanks very much in advance.
Regards,
