thermal wear
|
|
|
Hi,
I'm looking for thermal underwear, haven't purchased
any in a long time.
I recall I once owned some polypropylene long johns,
is that still state of the art? Is wool still better? Maybe
a blend, I can't take wool on bare skin...
Also, socks... wool, again? Or some other blend?
There's some issue involving 'wicking away moisture'
(whatever that means) - maybe wear 2 pairs of socks?
One underneath for wicking, the overlayer for insulation.
Thanks

Cabela's is a great place for outdoor wear: |

Look under hunting clothing.

I think polyester is the magic material these days.
Powerstretch (?) is polyester thread wrapped in a couple strands of
cotton thread. It is suppose to wick better.
I have a set of Eddie Bauer midweight Powerstretch long underwear. I
seems to work well. I purchased it 50% off at the warehouse outlet.
Polypropylene absorbs and retains oils. |

I tend to buy the Wicker's brand stuff. Wears well and fits good.
http://www.wickers.com I quit buying generic cotton underwear after getting
spoiled by their stuff.
Also, ExOfficio is pretty good too. http://www.exofficio.com
Neither is cheap, but it wears better than cotton and the ability to dry
quickly is nice.

I like Cool Max (sic) polyester next to my skin. It wicks away sweat, |
does not absorb oil, and is easier to care for and far more durable
than polypropylene. Cotton is comfortable under ambient conditions but
when wet, is clammy and clumps up feeling "boardy". For outer layers,
you cannot beat the membrane fabrics like Goretex. |

Say what you will about the new technology. Silk long underwear is still a
very significant contender in this. It feels great, keeps the wind out, and
is warm.

I've heard it is good - also pricey.
