annoying import warning

Hi all
when I do

from scipy.io import savemat

I get
import linsolve.umfpack -> failed: No module named sparse

Kind of weird since sparse is definitely there under scipy. (I tried
adding scipy to my PYTHONPATH and now I get import linsolve.umfpack ->
failed: cannot import name isspmatrix_csc)

What am I doing wrong? This is scipy 0.4.9
