Erlanger Programm - online?
|
|
|
What's the easiest way to see a copy of Felix Klein's
speech in which he announced his "Erlanger Programm"?
Has it been translated into English? Is it available
online? If not, why the heck not???
The speech is called
Vergleichende Betrachtungen Uber Neuere Geometrische Forschungen
and he prepared it to give as his inaugral address on
becoming a faculty member of the University of Erlangen -
but for some reason he wound up giving not this speech
but another. Did he ever give this speech?

Puzzle 2: The names of which pair of Shakespearian characters
appear on the astronomer Tycho Brahe's coat of arms - in the
list of his ancestors?

I found here
http://www.polybiblio.com/watbooks/2381.html
a first edition offered for BP 1550
Klein's own discussion of it is part 3 of his book
Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint: Geometry
(translation by E. R. Hedrick) now available in a reprint from Dover

I don't know if that book quotes the original or not.

At the time, it was axiomatic that any mathematician could read German.

Yes, there is an English translation by Haskell: "A Comparative Review of
Recent Researches in Geometry", Bulletin of the New York Mathematical
Society, vol. 2 (1893).

On this topic, is there an an on-line english translation of Riemann's
Habilitationsvortrag anywhere?
(Okay, I know this is in Spivak, and there's a german version at
http://www.emis.de/classics/Riemann/ , but still: a translation would
be pretty nice).

Why? It is almost always better to read a paper in its
original form.
But look here:
http://www.maths.tcd.ie/pub/HistMath/People/Riemann/Geom/
It took Google 0,12 seconds to find it. I used Goggle.de.
But Google is available in English also.

The complete works of Felix Klein can be read in the following library
http://gallica.bnf.fr
Make a search (Recherche) for "klein", and you'll find among others:
Gesammelte mathematische Abhandlungen. Dritter Band / Felix Klein
Gesammelte mathematische Abhandlungen. Erster Band / Felix Klein
Gesammelte mathematische Abhandlungen. Zweiter Band / Felix Klein
In "Erster Band" there is a whole chapter called "Zum Erlanger
Programm", where the document "Vergleichende Betrachtungen ber neuere
geometrische Forschungen" can be found. The whole book can even be
downloaded as a single PDF file (Tlcharger).
By the way, many classic mathematical books can be found in this
library. (For this time, thank you very much Franois Mitterrand !!).
