Farewell to the Stage
|
|
|
The theater is in a rage.
The crowd's going nuts.
But I am leaving you the Stage.
Are forceless any buts.
A man of mike, I've gotten old,
been singing for an age.
The 20th century, I'm called.
I'm leaving you the Stage.
It's boring to become a sage.
For this part, I'm too smart...
But I am leaving you the Stage.
From you the Stage I'll part.
've gauged the horizon, to engage
new bests into the Art.
I'm leaving leaving you the Stage.
From you the Stage I'll part.
God's arrow, 've darted thru my age
t' the finis, from the start.
Born actors end their part at Stage.
From you the Stage I'll part.
Will recollect you my motiff,
my fondling, grief, and rage?
Can we, without ourselves, live?
I'm leaving you the Stage.
You cherished me, your kid, in rye.
I took up your gage.
The wrench of saying you goodbye...
I'm leaving you the Stage.
I love your rusty architraves,
those troubled siren's paws...
Why we are doomed to leave our loves?
Farewell, my love. Adios.
They race t' the border of holograph art.
You could fall there into a mart?
For good I'm leaving you the Stage?
From you my Stage I'll part.
The squirrel in a squirrel cage,
is thrilling poor heart.
I'm leaving you my love the Stage.
From you my love I'll part.
I'm grateful you for joys and slings,
for every man and rhyme.
You seated me upon your wings
that most of people called time.
With all my soul, I've sung my bill,
performed my every clause.
I'm falling into softest still,
like into God's applause.
But in the land of night and God,
I'll dream of You a lot -
an egg yolk's dormant dimmy spot
that will become a bird. |

Manuel Bronstein died this week of a heart attack at age 42.
Manuel leaves behind Karola (his wife) and six children.
I just returned from a house-hunting trip in Pittsburgh
to hear this terrible news.
I worked with him at IBM Research and have maintained contact
with him since that time. In fact, he got me to volunteer for
another ACM/ISSAC CD project just last week.
Manuel was one of the fundamental people on the Axiom project.
He's given us permission to use his PhD thesis as documentation
for the integration routines. He has contributed quite a bit of
effort behind the scenes through personal communication with me.
Manuel was one of the key computational mathematicians of our time.
He had a major impact on the organization and implementation of the
Axiom library which will be a useful legacy for future generations.
He should have had 40 more years enrich us all.
More importantly, Manuel was a good person and a friend. We spent
much time together talking about and flying airplanes. I have a
set of pictures he sent me from his soaring trips in the Alps and
fond memories of our flying trips along the Hudson River in NY.
I'd like to figure out some way to mark his passing. At minimum
I believe we should include his obituary in the ISSAC proceedings.
If there are any other efforts or suggestions please contact me
so I can help.
In sadness,
Tim Daly

Farewell to the Stage
|
|
|
A clairvoyant kid, a dream I saw
About all my life, behold and lo.
Having awoke, 'pon my palm, this dream
I put, and gazed into its clear stream.
I dreamt that when I died a jukebox played.
And in the metal slots bright coins were laid;
Coins on both my eyes lay cold and bright
As the boatman ferried my thin shade into the night.
I dreamt a jukebox played. I saw the flame
Leap from a whirling disk which bore my name.
Felt fire like music sweep the icy ground -
And forward still the boatman moved, and made no sound. |

Manuel Bronstein, a well-regarded researcher
and a PhD graduate of Univ. of California, Berkeley,
died last month at age 42. I was one of the
signers of his dissertation on symbolic integration.
Tracing the headers on these "farewell" messages
suggests that they originate
in Simferopol, Ukraine, where Vladimir
Bondarenko lives. VB writes doggerel.

I saw the email address on the original "Farewell to the Stage"
was not Manuel Bronstein's normal email address, so have simply
concluded that it is an honest tribute to Manuel Bronstein. If
you think VB wrote it, you might complement him privately on that
or at least let it go, since I see nothing especially wrong with such a
respectful action. |

I am afraid that I cannot consider letters *signed* M. Bronstein by
some hidden individual as a "respectful action". This is called
identity usurpation and is usually highly unethical. It might be the
reason of a legal pursuit. There are acceptable ways of paying
a "honest tribute".
And, about the letter asking that Richard Fateman take some position
concerning him being the "hero" of one VB. --
Please.
All concerned people have undisputable right NOT to react; putting
hands into something not entirely clean is not a pleasant pastime.

i think you misunderstood my post. nowhere did i ask that Richard
Fateman to take some position. i was merely curious of what he thought
of VB and his sci.math antics. of course he is entitled not to respond,
i am perfectly happy with that. so *please* make sure you understand
what is being said before throwing false allegations. |
