'Line' Theory?

If, to date, 'strings' are purely defined mathematically. might it not be
more proper to refer to the concept as 'vibrating line' theory, instead?

When explained in ordinary language, it is difficult to not visualize the
model as a material composite, albeit an elemental one.

'String' seems to be an unfortunate term for a construct that has no
sectional modulus.
