What are the current advancements in Mathematics going on?
|
|
|
Does anyone knows latest happening in Maths.
2000 BC zero was invented in India. (Start of Maths)
In 00 Geometry was developed
In 1600 Trignometry was invented
In 1800 Calculus was invented
In 1900 Integration
In 1950 Statistical Techniques/ Linear Algebra etc.
In 1980 Graph Theory
Now What is being developed any glimpses to future of Maths. With the
advent of Computers and supercomputers the Calculations are very fast
but now it seems like Mathematics is just learnt by people nothing new
is invented in maths.

Maybe it's just that the new inventions/discoveries are getting more
and more specialised, esoteric and difficult, and are accessible to
fewer and fewer people.
I've often wondered if there's anything *simple* left to discover in
mathematics... |

If I had been asked what the major maths discovery of the 1980's was, I
would have been at a loss, and uttered a thing or two, but I would never
have even considered "graph theory."
Part of the problem is that mathematics is so big these days that I
don't think anyone really has a grasp of the total big picture. Experts
in one portion of the subject can be amazed at the advances in their
field, and never even know anything of great advances in another field.
And sadly you might be working in a field where not so much is going
on, and incorrectly believe that mathematics as a whole is stagnating.
Nevertheless, I do believe that mathematics is very much alive and
advancing.

My figures are rough figures if you know exact dates List it that would
be helpful.

I don't think zero can be traced back this far.
Also, I think two was invented way before
zero was invented. Finally, asking about the
latest happenings in maths is like asking about
the latest (last 10 years, say) happenings in sports.

I am a great fan of Maths. I have learnt nearly all techniques that can
be found in College level books. Now I want to know what new comming
instead of learning old things it is better to be updated with current
happenings

I think I see where you are coming from. You probably read a really
good book on graph theory that happened to contain many theorems from
the 1980's, and that's why you think that graph theory had its golden
age in the 1980's. Actually one of the nice things about graph theory
is that you can make discoveries in that field without knowing a lot of
big machinary.
Anyway, I am just going to throw out this suggestion, which I put out
there without really understanding your background, or your tastes, so
it might be completely off. But you might really like the book
"Classical and Modern Fourier Analysis" by Loukas Grafakos. (Disclaimer
- he is a friend of mine.) If you have a decent background in Lebesgue
measure theory, you may well have enough to get started, but the book
takes you up to rather recent advances in convergence of Fourier series
results of Theile and Lacey. Obviously this book isn't going to teach
you anything about recent advances in algebraic geometry, for instance,
but if that is your interest I most certainly cannot help you. You have
to strike out in one direction or another, and without some kind of
Ph.D. advisor, this is as good a direction as any.

This is probably false. I think that many great ideas in math seem
simple, but only with hindsight. As I look at the history of math and
science, it seems to me that advances have always been made in
relatively small increments. For example, Galileo could never have
discovered general relativity, yet general relativity could not have
been disovered without the groundwork layed by Galileo. Another
example, Newton and Leibnitz's discoveries of calculus were built upon
centuries of discoveries by others - for example, it could be argued
that it was Archemedes who really invented integration theory.
All the "greats" who discovered the truly simple ideas we have today,
were themselves fully immersed in the complexities of the ideas of their
times. So I think that if you want to be the discoverer of the next
great principle in science, you better get reading and learning, and
"stand on the shoulders of giants."

Graph Theory was first used in 1836 (Euler's problem involving the
bridges of Konigsberg). It has been used to solve the Four Color
Problem.

Fast computation explains why Graph Theory has been growing recently.
There are lots of problems still open though; for instance, the 3-Color
Problem. (Which maps can be colored with 3 colors?)
The new areas of math will be unknown to us. How would you explain
derivatives (or limits) to someone who only knows about the positive
integers?

That would be 1736.

You could do worse than to have a look at
http://www.ams.org/featurecolumn/archive/happening.html
You might find other useful stuff if you hunt around
the AMS and MAA websites.

You have NONE of the dates correct; they were all
considerably earlier. Also, the zero symbol, and the same
symbol in each place, go back to earlier than 3000 BCE, and
anyhow have nothing to do with mathematics.

Instead of learning techniques, learn the concepts.
They are the important part; facts and techniques
can be looked up, but concepts need to be internalized.
